The other day , I was at some relative's house, where in course of some discussion, lady started talking about ,how a man rang her doorbell and on questioning him , she found out that he was asking for some monetary help for the treatment of his daughter battling with terminal illness.
"I'm smart you know, I didn't get down in the ground floor to find out where he has come from, what did those prescriptions say, you know na, there are so many frauds around these days".
Yes, lady, smart you are.
I wonder how fool the man must have been to think that people living in big houses , with big cars, had a big heart too?
And yes, smart you are.
Did you ever try to put yourself in his shoes to feel the plight of the father of a daughter battling in between life and death?
You did n't have the time to talk to the man , to find out whether he was really speaking the truth or not, whether he too was a victim of the global meltdown, coz you had to miss parts of your favourite tv program .
You would let your son gulp 100 Mc Donald's burger, be obese, and then spend thousands of bucks in gym , but when it came to giving out 50 bucks to someone in pain, you have every possible reason up in your sleeves.

"Do not do to others , what you do not wish them to do to you"-- the world would have been a much better place if people had stuck to this saying by Confuscious.

hmmm. Bad enough. But you know what happened to me once? I was outside spencers, with a flavored milk tetrapack with me. There was one beggar woman sayin her kid was hungry. I bought a loaf of bread and along with that gave her this tetrapack. SHe was so bitchy and asked me to give her a few coins if I had or get lost. I felt shaken due to shock anger and frustration. Still, that lady could ve found out if he was genuine or shamming.

even though i'm against giving alms to beggars who just sit around the corner & are pretty fine ( call me selfish ) , but i've given money to ppl like your aunt encountered ( so don't call me selfish with your heart).
as for mc donald's burgers tell the obese kid to stay out of it if he ever wants a sexy gf !! (the other reason could be diabetes )

You know babe, you can't really blame them. There are so many people out there whose main occupation is to cheat people.... that caution has changed into something else altogether

yes people are unkind sometimes, but in fact there are a lot of people eager to help, but you can't blame them for being wary after being duped over & over again.

Today, while walking down the street, I spotted a man lying on the pavement. You could count his bones. And just a glimpse of his face was so jolting, I don't know - without any reasoning or thinking, I bought some biscuit packets and milk from a nearby shop and went back to gave it to him. And the poor man was having trouble even in holding those things.

I am not trying to cast an impression about myself but just that simple thing I realized then: the same thing SC just said: We can have a whole galaxy of reasons to escape help people: (sort of: helping this guy is not going to solve any global problems, or if i give money to this beggar, he would be used to it etc.) But as long as it's in our reach, we can help these greatly, even without our pockets knowing it. If you don;t think twice before helping your friends or colleagues, don't be philosophical about helping the needy.

touched...wow! a 50 buck to a needy would make all the difference to him....it really is sad that we indulge ourselves in all the worldly pleasures n when it comes to giving alms we keep searching for change...your post has that punch which would make people think and act...hats off!

Hey..... nice little post.... a little idealist.... but who am I to judge..... The lady may or may not have heart but you know many people have forged prescriptions to make you believe they need money... they make the life difficult for the genuinely needy ones.. but a good thought... If time permits go through the writings of Sudha Murthy ..... You'll find them good and most probably you'll find the answer why some behave like the lady in ur post

When you'll become more mature (not implying that you are not one now) you'll realize the difference between 'charity' and 'philanthropy' and may be then you'll be able to utilize those 50 bucks more effectively

Sorry for a long, preachy comment ... :(
